Depreciation is the natural drop in cost cars experience from the moment they are registered. While these fluctuations cause headaches for dealers who need to profit from the purchase of a car, this can actually be good news for private buyers that are more concerned with the reliability of a vehicle than its residual value.

There are a few circumstances where this starts to happen prematurely and can make for a bargain if you can spot where this has happened. One such situation comes about when new models of existing car are brought out with minor cosmetic changes to the bodywork or additional standard features. The model being superseded begins to fall in value and remember the older model may not have left the forecourt yet. In order to justify the full list price of the new model the cost of the older model much change to compensate.

Another situation where this can happen is during pre-registration. These cars are technically brand new but have been registered to the dealership in order to boost the figures of models which have been over supplied with no demand to balance it out. This has very little effect on the price initially but once the market changes and demand grows again, these cars cannot be sold as new but they are still in the same condition.

Used cars which are being sold privately are also subject to depreciation. While factors such as supply and demand will have a slight effect on the price of private sales the age and mileage are by far the biggest factors. When relatively new cars are being reluctantly sold they often go to auction.

The drawback with an auction from the perspective of a private buyer is the inability to have cars looked over by a professional mechanic before purchase. Auctions are far more restrictive than private or trade sales and in most cases you won’t even be able to get in and check everything works. If you know the list price of a new car and you see the same car at auction, the price difference should be great enough that you can lose the cost of any minor repairs in the saving. So if you fit in the age bracket, you should find out if your existing company offers this package, or switch to a company which offers it to save money.

Finding a good trailer for sale at a reputable online store is sometimes a challenge.  There are many stories about scams from some trailer companies that advertise trailers that do not exist and only want to grab you deposit money.  

Here is a typical story:

Deposit not refunded

This guy is a scam artist. We gave him a deposit for a trailer last November and the trailer was never delivered nor were our emails and phone calls returned. Went to his website to email him again in May and found a statement from an ex-employee that he was no longer in business and was being investigated for fraud. Have filed a complaint with the Attorney Generals Office. Have seen many similar stories about him on various sites. He does this for a living and from what I understand has now opened a new business. Do not under any circumstances give this guy any money!

It is much safer to buy from a dealer that can show you actual trailers that you can see in person instead of on an online auction site.  A good place to start is a new listing site that has thousands of trailers for sale.  Trailer-Pages.com is set up to allow you to browse and list new and used cargo trailers, utility trailers and dump trailers.  Best of all if you want to sell you used cargo trailer, listings are free to post for individuals and cost only $10 per month for dealers.
